Best restaurants and pubs in Shoreditch Galvin Restaurants
Just over a year ago we closed the doors forever on Café a Vin, despite its acclaim as one of the best restaurants in Shoreditch, as we felt we could offer more. Early in the new year it re-opened as Galvin HOP, a place we designed to be acclaimed as one of the best pubs in Shoreditch – and with a lot of hard work from our fabulous staff our locals old and new have been kind enough to say just that. The way that HOP’s more modern building segues into the grand old edifice which contains La Chapelle gives us two big advantages: firstly the glass atrium which links the two directly and gives a relaxed and atmospheric space to dine in and secondly the space between the buildings which we’ve created as one of the hidden gems of Shoreditch beer gardens.
In the summer, the terrace at the front and garden at the back of Galvin HOP allow us to ensure there is space for everyone to join us for a pint after work or bite to eat but, as you’ve probably guessed, the colder months make it harder to relax and enjoy oneself and the pubs of Shoreditch get more crowded as customers huddle for warmth. How then to help with this? To use the space which in the summer is such a boon to people? This is where the idea of our Winter Garden came to be. We decided to take back the outdoors by cheating just a little – it’s hard and uneconomic to heat an outside space all the time – and erecting a sturdy but atmospheric marquee as the first step in turning a Shoreditch pub garden into a winter wonderland. The next step was to kit it out with subtle yet powerful heaters which bring the space up to party temperature in a matter of minutes, along with flexible range of comfortable furniture. The sofas and chairs are piled high with cushions and, for those who feel the chill more than most, soft and fleecy blankets to ward it off. A sprinkling of festive decorations inside and out and it almost looked the part, there was just one thing missing… A full bar with fresh unpasteurised Pilsner Urquell delivered weekly from the brewery in Pilzen completed the basic set-up and voila – a winter party paradise was created in a Shoreditch pub garden.
Open from the middle of November and available for private use without a hire fee, the HOP Winter Garden was designed to make the most of being nestled between one the best pubs in the Shoreditch and one of the best (or if you ask Jose Pizzaro) the best restaurant in Shoreditch. We can do drinks parties with nibbles and finger-food as well as your own barman for up to 40 people or, with a quick change of the furniture, a sit-down feast for up to 30. Not only that but we’ve got the area between the atrium and Winter Garden itself which we can heat and offer in its entirety to give space for up to 80 people to enjoy themselves. A range of special menus accompany the Winter Garden, as well as the option to go a la carte of course, but if you really want to push the boat out we can offer you an entire tank of fresh Pilsner Urquell – that’s 440 pints – for you to have distributed as you wish. After all, it is Christmas, isn’t it…? All in all we couldn’t be happier with the way the Winter Garden has turned out and by the rate at which evenings are being snapped up we think our locals are too. Come rain or shine, summer or winter, we aim to have the best pub garden in Shoreditch.
